Aligning Company Mission with Vision

Aligning Company Mission with VisionAligning Company Mission with VisionAligning Company Mission with VisionThe way people treat each other in companies and other organizations is affected by the common vision shared by employees, says Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline. One of the deepest desires underlying shared vision is the desire to be connected to a larger purpose and one another.A study by the American Management Association shows that when employees personal values are congruent with their companys values, their personal lives are better, and they feel better about their jobs. According to Gregory Smith, author of Here Today, Here Tomorrow, An organization that can create an energized, higher-calling environment will have higher zurckhalten and greater productivity.Finding larger purpose is the key to building employee loyalty, and companies that generate loyal employees reap the rewards. Many service organizations have long-tenured employees, because they were able to easily link into their higher calling. How can your company build loyalty? What If Your Company Builds Bombs? Some companys products do not lend themselves to altruistic values. I worked for Honeywells Solid State Electronic Center in Colorado Springs, which built the computer chips in their regulators, mainframe computers, thermostats and bombs. It wasnt comforting to know my work produced weapons of mass destruction. However, our divisions mission was to improve individuals quality of life through the products we built. This was an easier mission to internalize. And yet I eventually resigned, because the companys values conflicted with my own.Determine your companys higher purpose. Dont think of building cars instead think of providing safety, reliability and peace of mind to consumers. Once you understand your companys higher purpose, share it with employees and applicants. Post company values in your employee manual, vacancy notices, brochures, and on intranet and Web sites.Wh at Else Can You Do?A company can also increase employee engagement and loyalty and decrease turnover throughClear and effective employee communication. When an organization lets employees know whats happening, employees feel more included and trusted.Continuous training and tuition reimbursement. Providing training is important, because 1. It is an investment in employees, which they see as money in the bank. 2. When you invest in workers, they are more apt to invest in your company.Expect greatness. When you raise the bar, employees will meet your expectations and feel important.Provide career counseling. When you help employees grow in their careers, they are more apt to stay with you.Invest in employees financial futures with a matching 401k. When you have a stake in their financial future, they will want to have a stake in yours.Reward and recognize employees often. Employees crave positive feedback and will be more productive when they receive it.Ask employees for input on impo rtant decisions. Employees will feel important and more committed to the mission.Institute exit interviews when faced with terminating an employee to determine why they are leaving.Establish a family-friendly benefits, particularly for hourly employees. Child-care benefits and flexible schedules allow employees to spend more time with family.Allow employees to work on visible projects, or add additional duties that interest them.Loyalty to your company mission doesnt come easily. You must build it one employee at a time. And building employee loyalty is much like building trust Its easy to tear down the challenge is to build it up and maintain it.

A meteor expert shares career lessons inspired by the moon landing

A meteor expert shares career lessons inspired by the moon landingA meteor expert shares career lessons inspired by the moon landingFifty years ago, this week (July 20, 1969), American astronautsNeil Armstrong andEdwin Buzz Aldrinbecame the first humans to land on the moon. Six hours later Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon and famously said Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.Darryl Pitt, who perhaps has the coolest job title on the planet Chair Meteorite Division of the Maine Mineral Gem Museum, spoke with Ladders about some of the cooler things to be learned from the Apollo moon landing.Know your nichePitt says the museums founder, Dr. Larry Stifler, asked him to become involved to create the meteorite component. I am fortunate to count many of the best meteorite hunters in the world as friends, Pitt said. He was charged with attempting to assemble the greatest collection of lunar meteorites on Earth. The fact that the Maine Mineral Gem Mu seum has more of the Moon than the 10 largest natural history museums in the world combined is extraordinary.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreLunar lesson learned Even if your dream job landseems out of your stratosphere, you have a better chance of succeeding if you have an ally or two nearby. And depending on your goals, your shared talents might actually allow you to overtake even the fiercest competition.Explore new possibilitiesWhether its deep space or a new career, exploration of any kind is critical to our growth as individuals and as a species, Pitt said. The appeal in the exploration of Interplanetary space is in part due to its existential qualities. However, while gazing at the night sky can be magical and transport us out of our routines, one should elend explore new possibilities without making certain one takes care of where we are - whether in a relationship or on the planet in which we live.Lunar lesson learned If youre not happy where you are, you should probably explore other opportunities. But be realistic. Dont cut immediately all ties at your current job or aim so high that you end up falling flat.Take another lookSometimes the newness of an opportunity seems dazzling that you lose sight of crucial aspects. One thing that grounds me is the exercise of confining myself to a space to explore the possibilities previously unseen, Pitt said. In some way, limiting himself allows him to see and experience more. There are always more possibilities than what we first see, and we need to take the time to look closely as we also explore the unknown.I personally believe the greatest service space exploration provides is in igniting young peoples desires to explore whatever it is for which they have a passion.Lunar lesson learned Sometimes you need permission to dream big. Other times you might need a nudge or reminder to have another look at wha ts already right in front of you.Youll need to prepareIf you look at space exploration as a metaphor, dreaming about reaching Mars almost seems like hoping for that next big promotion. The colonization of Mars will happen, its inevitable, but we better learn to take better care of our planet more quickly than the colonization of others, offers Pitt. Additionally, Going to a planet whose environment is hostile to human life is not like the Pilgrims coming to America. Simply expressed, civilization on another world without air will not be life as we know it.Lunar lesson learned This is a tough one, especially if youve been dreaming about the next career bump. But before you ask for that promotion, try to understand whats really involved in the next level and make sure youre ready for it. More than that, make sure your ducks are all in a row at your current job. The last thing you need is to leave a mess behind.Keep a sense of wonderWhy is it that were so excited with whatever is brand new and then move onto the next thing? We take for granted that with which were familiar, Pitt said, before adding this completely mind-blowing fact. I have handled quite a bit of the Moon - actually, there arevery few people that have handled more - and I periodically have to do an internal reset to appreciate that which I initially found to be so extraordinary. But sometimes Pitt needs to do a full reset. As it regards the Moon, what helps to remind me of how extraordinary and powerful a piece of Moon can be is by witnessing the thrill it provides to others when I place a piece of the Moon in their hands. More people need to be able to touch the Moon. Its an experience one does not forget. Ive inadvertently created traffic jams at TSA when I explain the rock with which I am traveling is a piece of the Moon.Lunar lesson learned Allow yourself to be both amazed and amazing at times. When eight of the remaining Apollo astronauts gathered for an anniversary photograph, the majority dressed in classic tuxedos. Eighty-nine-year-old Buzz Aldrin the second man to walk on the moon wore a silver suit with a rocket ship pattern, American flag socks, four gold rings, and two watches.

How to Be Your Own PR Person - The Muse

How to Be Your Own PR Person - The MuseHow to Be Your Own PR PersonDo you have your own PR partie? Unless youre a celebrity, the answer is probably no. (And if you are a celebrity, hi) However, that doesnt mean youre off the hook when it comes to building a strong reputation- in your office and in your industry. You need to advocate for yourself. No one else is going to push for you to get that job, that raise, or even that project that youre totally qualified to lead. Now, Im not talking about shooting off press releases to your office listserv about all your recent accomplishments. Im talking about the PR basics, or as we insiders call them, four commandments from the PR bible. Read them, memorize them, and start living by them.1. Know Your AudienceWhether youre writing an email, developing a new program, or walking into a review, you have to understand who youre talking to. This is called an audience-centered approach to communication. According to geschftlicher umgang Communicati on Foundations, An effective business message focuses on its audience. You might be talking about yourself, but you have to communicate in a way thats meaningful and respectful to your audience. Key questions to ask when getting to know your audience Whats my audiences biggest struggle or hurdle? Whats the problem they most want solved? What are their dreams or aspirations?Struggling for answers? A great way to get to know your audience, too, is to bring a list of questions and get them engaged. Its as simple as asking, What do you need most right now from me in my current role? 2. Build RelationshipsFace-to-face relationships still always elicit the best results- for PR people and for almost every other kind of professional. Email, text, phone calls, conference calls all have their distributions-mix. According to a report prepared by The Harvard Business Review, in-person meetings are essential. Executives cite them as a necessary investment, saying face-to-face communication is hi gh impact. Scheduling unterstellung sit-downs can be as easy as requesting a meeting over lunch, instead of a conference call. Or, walking over to the graphic design team to explain your vision, instead of just writing it in an email. The more you can make it clear that youre a living, breathing human (and not an email address that just exists to make requests), the more people will think of you as opportunities arise. 3. Be Proactive in a CrisisThe three rules of crisis communication are be quick, be helpful, and be open. A crisis in your daily workday could be something as common as sending an email to the wrong person, or as grave as a major financial miscalculation. While you cant always fix the problem by following these three rules, you can often mitigate the aftermath. Addressing the misstep head-on is almost always your best approach to avoid even further fallout. The faster you tell people what happened, the faster they can leap into action. Companies are advised to have a crisis communication plan in place so that everyones on the same page when disaster strikes. While you hopefully wont be creating any disasters all on your own, its good to have your own plan in place so that if the worst happens, you can walk through the steps without freezing up. Its as easy as knowing who you should contact first for particular problems. How can you be helpful when you just created a problem for other people? Do whatever you can to alleviate the damage- whether thats assisting with customer service inquiries or staying out of the IT teams way as they try to salvage your computer. Finally, be open. Decide how youll address the situation. (And it always needs to be addressed- even if you fixed it before anyone noticed.) According to the Institute for Public Relations best practices on crisis communication, the phrase no comment makes the organization- or you, in this case- look guilty, or at the very least, like you have something hide. So, speak up and schedule a time with your boss or team to talk about whats going on. Explain whats being done to rectify the situation, and what will be done in the future to prevent it. Answer any questions, calmly. And deliver follow-up information, as needed. Remember, Ill get back to you on that, is a viable response. 4. Follow Up, Stay in ContactA PR pro will tell you that if you havent followed up, you havent pitched. Follow-up is the integral piece of building relationships and getting your message out there. While your follow-up will be different- you arent necessarily trying to get an article placed or a spokesperson interviewed- you can still utilize the tactic to raise your profile. One key aspect of follow-up is consistency. Research on sales follow-up compiled by LinkedIn indicates the average person makes two attempts to reach a prospect, but 80% of sales are made on the fifth to 12th contact. Consistent follow up not only ensures your message gets through, but also that youre a person of integr ity who stays true to your word. As Joel Peterson, Chairman of JetBlue, explains, the smaller your say-do gap- the gap between what you say youre going to do and what you actually do- the more trust you inspire in the people around you. Not sure how to follow up without being annoying? Follow Elliott Bells tips for being pleasantly persistent. So, there you go, four PR commandments that can help you build your own brand and get ahead at work. Which one of these PR commandments applies to your life at work right now? Which will you give a test drive? Tweet at me AmandaBerlin.Photo of pointing at man courtesy of Shutterstock.

What I learned about success from interviewing wildly successful people

What I learned about success from einstellungsgesprching wildly successful peopleWhat I learned about success from interviewing wildly successful peopleWhen you think of success what comes to mind? You probably think of a great business leader like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Elon Musk. Right? Some of you may think of an A-list celebrity like Kim Kardashian or Taylor Swift. There is no doubt they are all successful people.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHowever, people define success in countless ways. From the amount of money in their bank account to the number of followers they have on Instagram, everyone strives to achieve their own version of success.Whichever way someone chooses to define success, it takes hard work, consistency, and persistence. My passion for helping my readers reach their financial goals led me to interview celebrities, influencers and business leaders. Shar ing their stories brought to life the struggle and triumph that led them to their success.I want my readers to feel as if they arent alone. I want them to hear from real people that they can relate to and learn from.Through my interviews, I discovered many of the celebrities I spoke with had similar characteristics. I began to binnensee patterns in their journey toward success.Over time, it became clear to me that applying these patterns to your own life can help you achieve the life you have always dreamed of. If you have been waiting for that push, here it is7 Habits of Wildly Successful PeopleTheyre WorkaholicsHow many hours do you work a day? For many people, they work 40-hour weeks and then spend the rest of their time enjoying leisure activities or watching their favorite Netflix shows. This is quite the contrary for the celebrities Ive interviewed. All the entrepreneurs, celebrities, and influencers I interviewed credited working more than 40-hours a week to their success. They live a life of passion and purpose, not one of complacency.Their drive to achieve their vision of success gives them energy and ignites their creativity in all aspects of their lives. This makes it easy for them to work 12-plus hour days. It amazed me that some of my communication with these celebrities would take place after midnight. They truly never stop working on their passion and are unapologetic about their persistence. In my recent interview withDominic Pace,he mentioned the importance of seeking his own work.Pace does not rely on anyone to find work for him, rather he pursues his own employment opportunities. He noted that being proactive in pursuing work doesnt make you aggressive or needy, it makes you ambitious and hungry for success.Your ambition and drive tischsetyou apart from the weak and the lazy. If you want something schwimmbad enough, you must put in more work than the average person is willing to. While others rest, you need to be working.Even if you have a 9 to 5 job, you still have 79 hours a week to do as you please. That number includes 7 hours of sleep a night.Thats 79 hours of non-sleeping hours when you could be turning your dreams into reality. If you want to be successful, use your time wisely. They Know Exactly What They WantGoal setting is an important trait of those that have achieved success.Knowing exactly what you want is the driving force behind your work ethic and passion. All the celebrities I speak with are extremely specific about what they are pursuing.Diane Franklinbelieves that success is not only defined by the habits we establishbut also in figuring out exactly what we want. To succeed you must define your goal and make a list of what steps you must take to achieve your dream. If you dont know what you want, you arent alone. But you need to start figuring it out. If you are stuck in a rut, then at the very least you already know what you are currently doing isnt working, and thats a start. Try something new and see if t hats better. If not, try again. This is your life we are talking about, so what could be more important?According to Diane, you must push aside your fear of failure and to focus on the path to success. If you fail along the way, dont be ashamed, use the experience as a learning experience and keep working on achieving your goalsFor example, if youre playing darts but dont hit a bullseye whats the point of the game? The point is to get better so that you can eventually hit the targetHaving a defined goal with a list of actions you must complete is the key to remaining productive.Knowing what youre working toward is key to accomplishing your goals and aspirations. They Respect the CompetitionIn addition to their passion for work, it is fascinating the healthy respect celebrities have for their competition. Almost every celebrity I interviewed was aware that if they were not willing to put in the effort, someone else would. The same can be said for successful businessmen and women. Entrep reneurs realize that theres always someone out there trying to steal their market share.Successful people respect the fact that to remain successful they must maintain the level of hustle that got them success in the first place. Many believe they must start over each day and work harder than the day before. The first sign of laziness or inconsistency can significantly harm everything they have worked for.Competition keeps them sharp and on their game. It forces them outside their comfort zone as well as pushes them to grow in their craft and skill. Many people view competition as a bad thing or something to try to avoid at all costs. However, competition is something celebrities celebrate and accept as a part of life. Theres always someone who will have more experienceor a better skill set than you do, but its up to you to keep striving for more.Once we accept the existence of competition, we can accelerate our own growth. To be honest, most people really arent paying attention to y ou anyway. They focus on their own work and what they need to do in order to achieve their ideal version of success.By using your competition to your advantage, you will always be one step ahead.Avoid Saying NoTime permitting, successful actors, writers and business leaders rarely say no to high-potential opportunities. It is impressive how rarely celebrities turn down work. Rather, than consider a role too small or large, they consider every opportunity to network. Theyre not fixated on the result of one effort, rather they focus on how the effort could lead to more opportunities down the road.Their opportunistic perspective leads them to realize bringing your A game to a low budget short, might lead to the director wanting to work with them again on a future big budget movie.Every opportunity leads to another opportunity. You never know whats right around the corner if you dont put yourself out there as much as you can.Think back to the times when you said yes to a new job or an ad venture. How did it turn out? Were you pleasantly surprised or disappointed? fruchtwein likely, it opened a new door to something you never thought was possible.By saying yes to big and small opportunities alike you increase the possibilities that happen in your life.Written SchedulesIn nearly every interview I conducted the interviewee kept a handwritten schedule. Either a dry erase board or a simple piece of paper. I was initially shocked that they didnt use Google calendars. In my recent interview withPerez Hilton, he discussed his need for scheduling. He doesnt do spontaneous work. Scheduling his life helps him balance all his avenues of work and stay on top of all his business obligations. Its easy for life to get in the way of your to do list. However, when you schedule your day hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute, you leave less room for error. The more structured you are with your daily schedule the easier it will be for you to achieve your wildest dreams.Time is priceless. The mor e you efficiently utilize your time to your advantage the more you will see results. They Invest in ThemselvesIt is amazing how much time and effort they invest in themselves. Everyone I interviewed could name at least one or two books that they recently read that they found helped their craft. The vast majority still work with a coach or a mentor, and several had recently attended training or conferences. Some people view coaches or mentors as something that only non-successful people need. It turns out that the opposite is true. You are your most important asset. Its your responsibility to continue to grow and get better every day. Each day provides the opportunity to learn something new and to enhance your skills. Its important to take advantage of these opportunities. After all, if youre not moving forward, youre moving backward.Did you know that you only retain 10% of knowledge by simply reading written material? However, you may retain 90% of the material you read and then implemen t right away. This means that it is imperative you continue to learn and apply your knowledge. Even if you re-read your favorite books, you will learn something new every time. They Hit the GymIt not just for vanity, each person I spoke with also believes hitting the gym and being physically active helps with their mental state. Everyone we spoke with mentioned that consistently hitting the gym helped them remain balanced and improved their mood.In fact, according to theMayo Clinic, exercise improves mood and boosts energy levels. If youre going to work 12 plus hour days, you better have a way to keep your energy up.In addition, exercise helps your cardiovascular system work better, giving you more energy to tackle any tasks at hand. Even the busiest celebrities make time to get their sweat on. Theyprioritize their healthbecause they knew it could help them maintain their level of success.Your Road to SuccessWhether you want to become an accomplished writer, an entrepreneur, actor or a profitable side hustler, the path to success is similar. The formula is simple, but few are up to the challenge. They are okay with a mediocre life.I learned there really isnt one secret to success. People who reach celebrity position or become business leaders are just like you and I. However, they are persistent, have discipline, and are consistent. They know exactly what they want. They take every opportunity and seize the day. This article first appeared on Money Mix.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Quality in qualifications how the childcare industry is changing

Quality in qualifications how the childcare industry is changing Quality in qualifications how the childcare industry is changingPosted February 24, 2014, by Julia Watters The childcare landscape is changing, and with it the qualification standards for early childhood teaching. In 2012, the Australian government began implementing revised early childhood qualification requirements as part of the National Quality Framework (NQF). In January of this year, further stages of the NQF were rolled out, continuing the initiative the government hopes will vastly improve quality of care and education standards for children prior to school. Implementation will continue until 2020, with the government establishing the Australian Childrens Education Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) to ensure the framework targets, such as qualification level, educator-to-child ratios and other staffing requirements, are met. While ACECQA will govern these changes on a national level, the responsibility for imp lementation and regulation will fall to each state government. There are seven Quality Areas on which states will cousine their ongoing assessment, including educational program and practice, childrens health and safety, physical environment, staffing arrangements, relationships with children, collaborative partnerships with families and communities, and leadership and services management. As confusing as it may sound, the two main goals of the new National Framework Qualifications are essentially to boost staff to child ratios and improve the level of caregiver qualifications. Some of these changes have already been rolled out, with others yet to be implemented, depending on the state. So what are the NQF requirements? Ratios Ratios for centre-based services Birth to 24 months 1 educator per 4 children 25 to 35 months 1 educator per 5 children 36 months to preschool/kinder 1 educator per 11 children Ratios for family day care services Birth to 13 years 1 educator per 7 children Qualifications As of January 2014, access to early childhood teachers will also come under scrutiny. In long day care and preschool centres with 25 children or less, there needs to be a qualified early childhood teacher present for a minimum of 20 per cent of the centres hours. Where child numbers are 25 or higher, the centre needs to employ or engage an early childhood teacher for a minimum of six hours per day, when the centre is open more than 50 hours per week, and 60 per cent of the opening hours when the centre operates for less than 50 hours per week. Long day care, preschools and family day care must also meet the following requirements Half of all educators must either have or be working towards an approved diploma or higher level education and care qualification The remaining educators must either have or be working towards an approved certificate III or equivalent level education and care qualification All family day care coordinators will need to have an app roved diploma level education and care qualification All family day care educators will need to have or be working towards an approved certificate III level education and care qualification What does this mean for jobs? If you are considering a role in early childhood education then the new regulations could be considered a blessing in disguise, as the more qualified you are, the higher your pay opportunities. With the increased pressure on long day care and preschool centres to provide more qualified staff comes more openings for higher paid roles within the childcare sector. With s o many people, it can be hard to focus on individuals. As a result, you may end up speaking in a general direction instead. An effective presenter, however, will speak directly to the people in the crowd, making eye contact as they go. You dont need to spend more than a moment on any one person. Youll feel more connected to your content and audience if youre actually talking to someone.3. They Ask QuestionsThis is the best way to draw your audience in and turn them into active participants. Selling to Small Businesses

Selling to Small BusinessesSelling to Small BusinessesFor certain products and services, the sweet spot prospect is small businesses. That kind of B2B schlussverkauf requires a very different approach from selling to big corporations or, for that matter, from selling to consumers. Small businesses have their needs and limitations, and if you can identify and address these, you can have considerable success with this market. What Is a Small Business? The Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as one that is for-profit, privately owned, and not dominant in its field. Small businesses generally have revenues under $20 million a year and employ fewer than 500 employees (sometimes much fewer). Businesses of this size usually dont have the need or the funds to keep a purchasing expert on staff. So if you sell to small businesses and your product is something more expensive than office supplies, odds are youll be selling to the business owner or owners. The good ne ws is that selling to small businesses generally means a shorter sales cycle as opposed to large business customers because you wont have to go through a long and involved approval process. In fact, you have a good chance of closing the sale at the first meeting. When youre dealing directly with the business owner, he doesnt exactly have to wait for approval from upstairs. The Decision Maker Before you meet with the decision maker, do some research and uncover at least the basics about his company. Just looking at your prospects website will usually tell you who the owners are, how long theyve been in business, whether the current owners founded the company or bought it from someone else, what their major successes have been, and so on. Some companies even list their significant customers, which can be hugely useful for your sales presentation. If you mention during your appointment how useful your product would be in future sales to Company X and back it up with an example or t wo, your prospect will be highly impressed. Small business owners are well aware of the dismal statistics surrounding the failure rate of small businesses. No matter how successful they are individually, they know that there is no safety net and that one really bad year can wipe them out. As a result, presenting your product as a way to increase the business owners peace of mind is often an effective approach. Saving money is also a highly useful benefit since many small businesses have very little margin for error financially. These owners are generally looking to advance their business in one of two ways to grow it until its a major player in the industry, or to attract a bigger company that will buy their company. Early on in the presentation, find out which way your prospect is leaning, and then position your product as a tool to help him achieve that end. For example, if you are selling accounting software, the ability to quickly produce reports going back several years would b e very helpful during a company sale or merger. Such reports would also help a growing company identify areas of strength or weakness and guide the business owners strategic planning. The beauty of tying your product or service into his long-term goals is that it will make him much less likely to switch providers later on. You are making yourself and your company, a strategic partner, to help him get his company where he wants it to go. As a result, youre armoring him against your competitors wiles.

Tell me what you say yes to, and Ill tell you who you are

Tell me what you say 'yes' to, and I’ll tell you who you are Tell me what you say 'yes' to, and I’ll tell you who you are “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything.” ?- ?  Warren BuffettAccording to Aristotle, “We are what we repeatedly do.” More directly, we are what we say “yes” to.Every second of every day, you’re saying “yes” to something. Every time you do something, you say “yes” to that thing. Every time you hop on Facebook and begin scrolling you’re saying “yes.” Every piece of food you put in your body you’re saying “yes.” Right now, as you read this article, you’re saying “yes.” When you say yes to anything, you say no to almost everything else. Every choice has embedded opportunity cost. Every choice is very costly. Saying yes isn’t free.Self-signaling: The science of identityAccording to research by Dr. Ronit Bodner and Dr. Drazen Prelec, “Actions provide a signal to ourselves, that is, actions are self-signaling.” In other words, your actions provide a signal to you of the type of person you are.If you wake up early and go running, you’ll think to yourself, “I’M THE KIND OF PERSON  Ã¢€¦ that wakes up early and goes running.”Whatever decisions you’ve made, you’ll conclude “I’M THE TYPE OF PERSON  Ã¢€¦ that does X, Y, OR Z … ” (Luckily, as will be shown in a moment, your past is actually highly fluid, and can be changed by future actions.)In the recent book, Skin in the Game, Dr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb explains that WHAT YOU DO is the purest definition of your value system. In Start with Why, Simon Sinek said the same thing. Your acti ons demonstrate what you really believe.Gandhi said, “Action expresses priorities.” He also said, “To believe in something, and not to live it, is dishonest,” which is what psychologists call “Cognitive dissonance” - the state of internal conflict. You can’t be confident if you don’t trust yourself. Confidence is a byproduct of congruent and successful behavior.Confidence is the emotional state of someone whose PRIOR action was intentional and accurate of the person they planned on being.Past, present, and future identities“It’s a conscious decision to choose your priorities every day.” - Elisabeth Hasselbeck Your present identity is based on what you said “yes” to yesterday. Who are you today is a product of your previous decisions. Your future identity is what you say “yes” to today. Who you’ll be tomorrow is a product of your current decisions. Your past identity is what you’ll say “yes” to tomorrow. Who you were in the past is a product of future decisions. Because memories are highly fluid and change based on current and future experiences. No matter how dark or conflicted your past, it can absolutely be transformed. As you change, the meaning of your past changes - as does the memory of it. Your past can be redeemed by positive future decisions. Your present can make sense when you say “yes” to only that which you aspire to be like. And your future is as bright as your faith. As Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”But only if you act in accordance with that future vision …Hence, Zig Ziglar was famous for saying, “You’ve got to be before you can do and do before you can have.” You decide WHO you want to be, and act accordingly. If you don’t act accordingly, you’ll signal to yourself that you’re someone else. Because you are what you DO. More directly, you are what you say “YES” to.You DECIDE who you want to be. But that decision is only a real decision if you DO what that decision entails. Otherwise, it wasn’t really a decision. The decision is only a decision if ACTION aligns with it.Conclusion“If you have more than three priorities, you don’t have any.” -  Jim Collins, Good to GreatIn the book, ESSENTIALISM: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Greg McKeown states, “You cannot overestimate the unimportance of practically everything.”Most things should swiftly be said, “NO” to.To repeat the quote from billionaire Warren Buffett: “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything.”Similarly, Jim Rohn said, “A lot of people don’t do well simply because they major in minor things.”Most people say “YES” to minor things. Hence, most people live minor, not major lives.Who will you be tomorrow? That depends on what you DO today.Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. The new rules for interoffice communication tools

The new rules for interoffice communication tools The new rules for interoffice communication tools Here’s an excerpt from my upcoming book,  Wait, How Do I Lead My Team?  (available on Amazon in April 2019).Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Start sentences with capital letters and capitalize proper nouns until the co-worker on the other end proves he/she prefers lowercase words at all times. For example: “Do you have the report for the Nicholson account yet?” â€"     Once the other person shows a preference for lowercase words, you may choose to go with, “do you have the report for the Nicholson account yet? â€"     If you type with the case the other person prefers, you are always in the right. In the same vein, stay away from emojis until the other person drops one first. Even though the chatter through instant messages can be rapid fire, watch every word you type. Many communication tools act as archives so anyone with access can find past conversations in the program. â€"     Plus, a two or three-person dialogue can, the next day, include several more people. Maybe one of the new people wasn’t supposed to read a message that appeared a day before? Uh oh. When the message thread includes clients, my opinion is to maintain proper rules of capitalization at all times - even if the other person is into lowercase writing and abbreviations. â€"     The client pays you for a service, and you should maintain a high level of professionalism. How to Deal with a Terrible Boss

How to Deal with a Terrible Boss How to Deal with a Terrible Boss I had a friend whose manager was so unprofessional and made each work day so unbearable that my friend ended up quitting. Even though she enjoyed her position and made a decent amount of money, the thought of having to continue working under her bosss leadership was unbearable and just not worth it. Yet, in today̢۪s job market, not everyone can afford to make this type of decision. So, you̢۪re stuck at the job with a barely tolerable boss. What do you do? Below are two different types of annoying bosses and how to deal with each one: 1. The Ghost This is the boss who̢۪s never there, or at least never there when you need the person. You pull your eight-hour shift and then some, putting the files in order or the store back together. You know your boss is somewhere in the building, doing something vaguely related to his/her job, but isn̢۪t there something more helpful this individual could do? The fact is, quite a few of these bosses fall into two subcategories. One is the boss who doesn̢۪t want to be there. This is the boss who likely hates coming to work as much as you and avoids responsibility like the plague because he or she simply doesn̢۪t want to do it. With this type of boss, your best bet is to ask for help. If none is available, and you really feel this person is shirking his/her duty, perhaps a call to the person above your immediate boss is in order. If you have the rare boss who is actually doing work behind the scenes and you feel you and your needs are being ignored, simply asking for help is usually the answer. Maybe when things have slowed down, ask to have a day where your boss shows you what his or her position entails. It will show that you are interested in promotion while also helping you understand all his/her required duties (and whether or not the person is actually fulfilling them). 2. The Micro-Manager Maybe you have the opposite of the ghost- the micro-manager boss. It seems like this persons entire mission in life is to sit over your shoulder and remind you of things you already know. Maybe he or she reminds you via emails or in passing conversation of work that is due hours from now. These kinds of bosses can be especially grating because they can make you feel like a child who needs extra special, around-the-clock surveillance. Dealing with a micro-manager is oftentimes very difficult if he or she has a short fuse. If these types of bosses fly off the handle easily, the best way to deal with them is to over compensate for a while. Turn in things early, make sure your job is done and your station is clean well ahead of time. It might mean a few weeks of tough work, but after a while, you will notice you are no longer the target. If the person is more pragmatic, you can usually prove your point by just ignoring your manager when he or she bugs you but still turning in your work on time. As long as you are on time, rarely is there a reason for your boss to bother you, and eventually, he or she will leave you alone.

The Best Talent Management Practices

The Best Talent Management Practices The Best Talent Management Practices Think of talent management as a business strategy that will help you retain exceptional employees. For effective talent management, every aspect of recruiting, hiring, and developing employees is affected positively. The goal of talent management is a superior workforce. What Talent Management Involves Talent management, when handled strategically, flows from the organizations mission, vision, values, and goals. This enables every employee to see where they fit within the organization. This, in turn, enables employees to participate in the overall direction of the company. From a strategic perspective, an effective talent management system helps crucial employees feel as if they are part of something bigger than their current job. Talent management includes the following activities and work processes: Develop clear job descriptions, so you know the skills, abilities, and experience needed from a new employee.Select appropriate employees who have superior potential and fit your organizations culture, with an appropriate selection process.Negotiate requirements and accomplishment-based performance standards, outcomes, and measures within a performance development planning system.Provide effective employee onboarding and ongoing training and development opportunities that reflect both the employees and the organizations needs. Provide on-going coaching, mentoring, and feedback, so the employee feels valued and important.Conduct quarterly performance development planning discussions that focus on the employees interests for career development.Design effective compensation and recognition systems that reward people for their contributions. Even if all of the rest of your employment processes are employee-oriented, people still work for money. Employers of choice aim to pay above market for talented employees.Provide promotional and career development opportunities for employees within a system that includes career paths, succession planning, and on-the-job training opportunities. Hold exit interviews to understand why a valued employee decided to leave the organization. If the reasons provide information about company systems that you can improve, make the changes that will better retain talented employees. Research Supports Using Talent Management Strategies In a study by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) in partnership with The Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp), the following practices were identified for their positive impact on successful talent management: Obtaining support for talent management from top management.Standardizing talent review and feedback processes.Appointing a single functional owner of talent management internally.Developing an organizational culture that supports talent management.Assuring consistency among the talent management activities.Increase the visibility of talent management initiatives. The ASTD study identified these findings (verbatim): High performing organizations tend to integrate talent management components more than low performing organizations.Learning executives play critical roles in major integrated talent management components. Many of the most effective integrated talent management practices are not widely used.Impediments to effective integrated talent management efforts include conflicting priorities, limited resources, non-supportive corporate cultures, incompatible organizational processes, and senior leaders who undervalue integrated talent management. Summary of Talent Management Best Practices The workplace processes and systems that must effectively work together to produce a talent management strategy that will provide results for an organization have been highlighted. Further, an ASTD/i4cp study identified factors that are present more of the time in organizations that have a successful talent management strategy operating. The most intriguing idea that emerged in the review of talent management was the success of implementing talent management review meetings. By talking about talented employees and making their knowledge, skills, and potential known to other managers in different parts of the organization, the potential use, and development of internal talent are magnified for both the organization and the talented employees.

6 Ways to Manage Stress at Work

6 Ways to Manage Stress at Work 6 Ways to Manage Stress at Work Workplace stress touches most of us at one time or another. In fact, according to the American Institute of Stress , 80 percent of us feel stressed at work. Deadlines loom. Bosses make unrealistic demands. Restructuring means anxiety over job security. Although stressors may be an inherent part of work life, buckling under the pressure doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of reasons to manage your workplace stress rather than accepting it as part and parcel of having a busy career. For starters, stress takes a heavy physical toll . It can cause headaches, stomach upset, irritability, depression and even elevated blood pressure. Along with its emotional toll, prolonged job-related stress can drastically affect your physical health. Constant preoccupation with job responsibilities often leads to erratic eating habits and not enough exercise, resulting in weight problems, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels Stress doesn’t exactly make you more productive on the job, either. It can strip away your ability to concentrate and process complex thoughts. Stress can make it difficult to find the motivation to complete tasks, which creates a negative feedback loop when you’re under pressure to perform. Sure, you’re stressed. But do you actually know why? Many of us walk around on edge without ever taking a moment to uncover the source of our stress on a deep level. Let’s say you often struggle to meet deadlines. Being behind the curve at work can be anxiety-inducing. Can you identify the underlying problems? Maybe a chatty coworker distracts you more frequently than you thought, or you’re lured away from your tasks by social media. Now that you’ve identified the root of the issue, you can work on regaining your focus . If you respond to stress by coming home, opening a bag of chips and flinging yourself at the couch where you’ll binge-watch Netflix until you crawl off to bed, you’re not doing yourself any favors. Here are some better ways to combat stress: It’s tempting, especially when job stress is high, to push onward and be a martyr. We all like to come across as committed to our work. But is your commitment really shining through if you’re stressed out all the time and less productive as a result? Trust us. You need a vacation . Taking time off to rejuvenate ultimately makes workers more productive . It can also reduce symptoms of stress like sleeplessness, fatigue and headaches. Return to work relaxed and refreshed and you’ll be better equipped to get things done. How often do you find yourself thinking, Ugh! I should be getting my act together! All those “shoulds” tend to pile up on a person, creating stress. But learning to tune in to that interior monologue allows you to focus your thoughts. Mindfulness, and a practice called radical acceptance can help. Radical acceptance encourages you to look at distressing events as though you’re a casual observer with no stakes in the game. You begin by simply describing what happened, and your role in it, in the most objective terms possible. Then you assess what you had control over in that particular situation, and what you didn’t. Mindfulness challenges you to accept the things outside of your control. Why stress over things you’re powerless to change? It also helps you shift your emotional response from negative to neutral, or even productive, by teaching you to channel your energies toward acting (taking ownership of the things you do have control over) rather than simply reacting. Don’t be afraid to admit when you’re in the weeds. Everyone gets overwhelmed from time to time, and there’s no shame in asking for help when you truly need it. We tend to view asking for help as admitting defeat. But put yourself in your manager’s shoes. Would you rather an employee make excuses for not completing a project on time or to your satisfaction, or have that employee ask for help before disaster strikes? There are a few caveats to asking for help. First, make certain you’ve put in your best effort before you seek out assistance. Second, prepare any questions you have in advance. If you simply go to your boss with a complaint without offering any solutions, you’ll sound like you’re whining rather than being proactive about solving a problem. Most of all, be sure you know the answer to the question your boss is likely to ask: What do you need from me? When you’re stressed out, it helps to take a few deep breaths and remember what you love about your job. Maybe the work is fulfilling, or you have great coworkers, or you’re actually living the dream of being what you always wanted to be when you grew up. It’s impossible to feel both grateful and fearful or angry at the same time, so remind yourself from time to time that there are good things about your job even when the stressors are mounting. Of course, if there’s nothing to love anymore, it may be time to consider moving on. Work stress is a fact of life, but if coping strategies aren’t working and you don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel, it may be time to hit the job boards in search of a better fit before stress takes a serious physical or emotional toll. The Important Habit That Too Many Successful People Forget About

The Important Habit That Too Many Successful People Forget About The Important Habit That Too Many Successful People Forget About As a freelance writer, I specialize in career advice. From job interview tips to networking strategies, I author articles that either help people find their dream careers or take their existing ones to the next level. As a result, sometimes I hear from people who are seeking some guidance- or, even just a friendly email reassuring them that everything is going to pan out alright. And, that’s exactly what happened nearly a year ago. This woman, who was still relatively young in her career, was frustrated. She didn’t like what she was doing, yet she couldn’t quite figure out where she wanted to go- or the steps she needed to take to get there. I reassured her that I felt that exact same way before, told her a little bit about my own story and path, and passed along some articles that I thought would help her gain some clarity. She quickly replied to thank me, and I assumed that would be the end of our relationship. Related: How Gratitude Can Make You More Creative and Innovative Saying “Thank You” Just a few days ago, an email from this same woman appeared in my inbox. Assuming she was seeking more advice, I clicked it open to see what questions she had this time. I quickly read through her message, and then- after being surprised by what I saw- I read it again. Before I knew it, I was misty-eyed and smiling. She wasn’t emailing with follow-up questions. Instead, she was circling back to let me know that she took my advice and put herself out there to find a better opportunity. It worked. She was starting her dream job the following Monday. She thanked me profusely for the guidance I had shared. But, even more so, for being in her corner in a moment when she felt lost, confused, and alone. Of course, I responded immediately to let her know how much her email meant to me. However, it also inspired me to think about something else. Related: 14 Scientifically Proven Ways Gratitude Can Bring You Success and Happiness When’s the Last Time You Sincerely Expressed Your Gratitude? We all know saying “thank you” is important. But, take a minute to ponder this question: When’s the last time you turned around and genuinely thanked someone? No, I’m not talking about that quick “thanks” said in passing by the break room coffee maker or that “thank you so much!” you halfheartedly added to the bottom of that email you tapped out on the subway. Instead, when’s the last time you dedicated an entire message or communication to let someone know how much you appreciate them and the impact they’ve made on your life? If you’re anything like me, you’re coming up a little empty-handed. Our lives get busy, and gratitude can easily get pushed to the bottom of the priority list- I’m guilty of this very same thing. But, this heartfelt email immediately made me think of people that I should touch base with to update them on my success and- more importantly- thank them for the role they played in it. My college journalism professor who told me that I had the talent to write for a living. The local freelance writer who sat with me over coffee when I was debating taking the leap from my full-time job. The editor who challenged the entire way I approached my writing assignments. They’re all people who had a major part to play in shaping my professional life. But, as sad as it sounds, I can’t think of a single time when I let them know how much that meant to me. Related: I Wrote 70 Gratitude Emails- Here Are My Awesome Results Moving Forward Remember this: Absolutely nobody does anything alone. We all have those people who have had a hand in making us who we are today and, at the very least, they deserve a sincere expression of your gratitude. So, I challenge you to get out there and truly thank these people for what they’ve added to your life. Trust me, it’ll make the day that much better for both of you. Job Training to Set You Apart From the Competition

Job Training to Set You Apart From the Competition Job Training to Set You Apart From the Competition When you were a child and wanted to learn how to tie your shoes, ride a bike or recite the alphabet, you most likely needed a little bit of help to achieve your goals.  Parents and teachers were available to put you through your paces, provide instructions and to train you in the fine art of ABC’s and wheelies off the curb.   Entering the job market isn’t all that different than learning how to tighten the laces on your first pair of sneakers.  In today’s competitive job market, candidates will often have certain foundational certification or skills requirements.  In addition, advanced training in critical areas can help give you a leg up on the employment seeking competition.  Not all training is created equal, however.  Here we break down a few fundamental aspects of job training to set you apart from the competition. Communication Skills In today’s increasingly interactive world, even the most desk-centric job will likely require advance communication and interaction with customers or peers.  Whether shooting off an email over that complicated HR scenario or leaving a concise message for the latest restock order, the ability to clearly and efficiently communicate is an asset to employers and employees alike.   Getting this training is often times an on-the-job type of deal.  Various online courses, however, do offer advanced communication skills workshops.  Learning how to structure sentences for the most impact, how and when to use colloquialisms and strategies for getting straight to the point without appearing rude or curt, can all give you a heads up in your job search, whatever your chosen field may be. Tech Skills It’s hard to envision a modern business that doesn’t use technology to help interact with customers or streamline their money-making endeavors.  It would only make sense, then, that businesses would have a preference for candidates that come pre-loaded with a host of technological certifications or skills.   The trick to training in this category is to determine which types of programs or technology will be most utilized in your chosen career field.  For some job-seekers, advanced training in word processing suites may be more than enough to make the hiring manager’s eyes light up in appreciation.  Other companies or positions may require advanced programming or database knowledge before they’re impressed.   Leadership Skills Maybe you’ve been told that you’re a born leader or manage to exude confidence in every scenario.  Without specialized training designed specifically to hone these skills for the job place, however, claims that you’re above average in the leadership department are likely to fall on a hiring manager’s deaf ears. Don’t presume, either, that just because the position doesn’t call for supervisory experience that the ability to lead a team won’t be a trait your company values.  Savvy businesses seek out employees for the long term and are constantly on the lookout for candidates to innovate and who may be future heads, chiefs, and executives.  Brush up on your leadership skills with a little outside training and help your prospective employer picture you in the manager’s or c-suite, eventually.

How to Address Long-Term Unemployment in Your Job Search

How to Address Long-Term Unemployment in Your Job Search How to Address Long-Term Unemployment in Your Job Search If youve been unemployed for a long stretch  Ã¢€" say, six months or more â€" the job search may feel like a fruitless endeavor. However, with the economy improving and more and more jobs being created every month, opportunity really does exist. Its just a matter of learning to position yourself to grab that brass ring. If youve been out of work for a while now, there are some simple tweaks you can make â€" to your resume, to your cover letter, and to your expectations â€" to increase your chances of landing the job you want. Here are eight tips to help you: 1. Be Honest Honesty is the best policy for several reasons, not the least of which is that the stress of trying to hide a big gap on your resume can take its toll and affect your performance in job interviews. Our advice? Lay your cards on the table. Mention in your cover letter that youve had an employment gap and briefly explain the reason why. There is no need to get too personal or go into great detail. Simply acknowledge that you experienced a layoff or took time off to raise your children, for example. Before an interview, rehearse your employment gap explanation  verbally. Another reason never to lie? A background check or call to a reference will likely send your house of cards tumbling, and an impending offer could be pulled if a recruiter discovers that youve misled them. 2. Dont Disparage Your  Previous  Employer If you were laid off or fired from your previous  job, it might be tempting to trash your former employer. Resist the urge. Your explanation of an employment gap should never contain bitterness against a past company or former boss. Keep your responses simple and neutral. Explanations like Culturally, it wasnt a good fit for me or After the merger, my role was eliminated explain an exit without laying blame. Better yet, try emphasizing something positive about the situation, such as a lesson or skill you learned during your time in your  previous  job. 3. Rewrite Your Professional Summary As an unemployed person, youve likely been filling your days differently than you did when you were working full-time. Perhaps youve been volunteering. Maybe you started a blog or took some  courses to beef up your skill set. Mention these activities in your summary to show employers youve done valuable things with your time while you were out of work. 4. Focus on Results Quantifying achievements is essential for any job seeker, but its especially critical for people who have been unemployed for long stretches of time. Being able to provide numbers to back up your past professional achievements â€" e.g., Managed a team of five engineers or Increased sales revenue by 10 percent â€" will show a prospective employer what youll bring to the table. 5. Organize Your Work History According to Relevance Rather Than Chronology If youve been out of work for awhile, you may end up taking a  job outside of your career path just to make ends meet. If your most recent position isnt relevant to your career goals â€" for example, if you are a marketing professional  who waited tables to survive unemployment â€" try reorganizing your resume so that irrelevant jobs end up at the bottom. Bump up the roles that are relevant to your career and the roles you are applying for. 6. Keep an Open Mind If youve been unemployed for six months or more, it may be time to look into opportunities to use your skills in a new field. Many skills are transferable between industries. Do your homework to find out if your skills are sought after in an area with more opportunity. 7.  Adjust Your Wish List The job hunt is like dating: People have definite ideas about what they want and can be very rigid when it comes to their lists of must-have qualities. If youve been looking without success for a particular job title in a particular industry, you may have unintentionally limited your chances of getting hired. You arent the same person you were when you lost your job, and reorganizing your professional wish list can help you find new opportunities. Are catered lunches at the office really a must-have? Could you conceive of commuting a bit further? Making small adjustments, like being slightly flexible about your job title or being open to contract work, might  bring to light  opportunities youve been overlooking. 8. Reinvent Yourself The gift unemployment gives us is time, so make the most of it. Take courses, read books, or learn the latest software in your field.  Grow your skills! If you see unemployment as an opportunity rather than a curse, you can come out the other end with a new set of skills. Be sure to add all that youve learned to your resume. Employers want to see engaged candidates who seize opportunity.
